Even though it has been more than 20 years since the cartoon series debuted, Larry Kenney
is still very active in regards to his ThunderCats ties. When you get a reply to an e-mail you sent him to say
thanks for his participation in a classic animated series, there's no doubt you can hear the pride in his words
for being the voice of the youthful Lord of the Thundercats, Lion-O (of which, he would love to
reprise if there came an opportunity).
Why shouldn't he be? Lending his regular speaking voice to Lion-O (and a variation of it with other
characters) in the series has Mr. Kenney's fan mail coming to him around 350 e-mails a week (even from
eight-year-olds today)!
You shouldn't be surprised to learn Mr. Kenney is a near 50-year veteran of the airwaves, from Illinois to
New York radio stations as a talented disc jockey (who won Billboard Magazine 's "Disc Jockey of
the Year" in 1976 and 1978). Since 1973, you have been able to catch his comedy antics on one of
New York's popular radio shows, "Imus In the Morning." Mr. Kenney's impressions of Patton, Richard Nixon,
and Walter Cronkite (to name only a few) are all part of the job on the show.
It also shouldn't surprise you Mr. Kenney has done the voice of Sonny: The Co-Co Puffs Bird, and Count
Chocula for nearly three decades! It can be absolutely mind blowing a good chunk of the characters'
voices you heard growing up came from one man! If you were enchanted with some of the Rankin-Bass
Entertainment specials over the years, you more than likely heard a variation of Mr. Kenney's
voice in The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, Twelve Days of Christmas, and A Star for Jeremy.
After Thundercats and Silverhawks, Mr. Kenney joined Bob McFadden, Earl Hammond, and Peter
Newman in Karate Kats and Tigersharks. (Now, keep in mind Mr. Kenney was also on "Imus In the
Morning" all the way through doing these series. Talk about a full schedule!)
Mr. Kenney does have one regret when it comes to his career. He passed up an opportunity to voice one of
the lizards from the Budweiser commercials several years ago because he didn't think the job was going to last.
(Don't think he hasn't kicked himself for that one!)
As for Mr. Kenney's life outside the recording studios and radio stations, he is married to Carol and
they have three children, a son-in-law and a grandson. When it comes to the cartoons he has
contributed his voice to, Mr. Kenney's kids love knowing their dad is one of the talents behind the
scenes. One of the times that stands out for Mr. Kenney, concerning his cartoon voice over work, was
walking down the Thundercats aisle in Toys R Us with his daughter and hearing all the kids discuss
which figure they wanted to buy and why. For hobbies, Mr. Kenney loves to fish, play guitar, and write
songs. He has a wide range of music interests, from Country (Willie Nelson, George Jones), to
Rock/Folk (Beatles, Don McLean), and Classical (Mozart and Rachmaninoff).
Recently, Mr. Kenney has signed on for a new cartoon series. Also, please visit the
official Larry Kenney website.
